Lincoln Road is the second pedestrian Mall in the country designed in the Post-War Era, by a Mid-Century Modern (MiMO) architect Morris Lapidus. See for yourself his green, lush tropical wonderland where he convinced a City that a “car never bought anything!†and closed Carl Fisher’s Lincoln Road into a pedestrian mall in 1960. Help us relive those days with an exciting “stroll through time” by asking to Art Wrap our Bollards with History on each street with a memorable Miami Beach story!
In these economic times it is hard to ask for money for a celebration, so the Lincoln Road 50th Anniversary Committee has one modest idea for funding that includes your consent. The Bollards at our five City Blocks could be used as a naming opportunity: similar to stadium naming opportunities. These 43 bollards will represent our history in art as temporarily applied painted designs. The Art would be selected from a County Wide student competition.
The “art†globes would represent the history of Lincoln Road. Sponsors will pay for this art to be shown during our Anniversary Celebration starting with art exhibits in June 2010, unveiling in Dec 4, 2010 and a yearlong stroll in time during 2011 as GLOBES ON LINCOLN.
Once the globes are designed, they would be transformed into specially designed “Beach Ballsâ€. With these globes our history could be shipped anywhere in the globe. The 43 Globes on Lincoln would be great advertising for us: exporting fun and telling our story our creatively. All celebration funding would be by The Globes Corporate Sponsorship. This modest symbol; the beach ball, would be our ambassador of fun in the sun as edutainment. We have a letter from the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce also showing interest and support. And a motion was made in the Lincoln Road Association to approve the idea of a celebration; details to be hammered out. We are now seeking recognition and support for this idea within the City.
We need a resolution on the July 15 Commission Meeting! Please offer your voice!
With this approval, we can put a global exclamation point on Miami Beach!
