Call details: The Goodridge Freedom Center and Underground Railroad Museum is announcing their art contest commemorating and honoring the life of William C. Goodridge and the Freedom Seekers. William C. Goodridge had spent the majority of his youth as an indentured servant, eventually rising from the institution of slavery and earning his freedom at the age of 16. Once free, he worked to become one of the most successful businessmen in the York area; starting as a barbershop owner, turning into a real estate speculator, and eventually becoming the proprietor of the Reliance Line where he used rail cars to help the enslaved. Goodridge along with the Freedom Seekers–a group dedicated to aiding the enslaved towards freedom—became heroes as they risked their lives to help those in pursuit of freedom.
Submissions will be open for the next five months as jurors evaluate and critique the entrants’ works and decide which pieces make it into the show. Artists are encouraged to give their own interpretations of the Freedom Seekers theme. Initial submissions must be copied and submitted digitally by February 12th, however, the actual art pieces themselves may be of any medium. All entrants are allowed to submit up to 3 separate pieces of work for free, but once accepted, must pay an entry fee of $25.00 for each accepted work.
During the month of April, the exhibit will be open for viewing to the public with the artists’ reception and award presentation being on April 1. A total of $1,000 in cash prizes will be awarded to the top three pieces hand-selected by the jurors. Any sales made through the exhibit will be charged the standard commission of 25%.
The Goodridge Freedom Center remains an historic monument in the York community. It is operated and preserved by the Crispus Attucks Association with the goal of maintaining its history for the community and its future generations. With this art contest, the Goodridge Freedom Center hopes to continue to honor William C. Goodridge and the Freedom Seekers.
