“This Art is So Gayâ€
LGBT Visitor Center To Host Visual Artist Exhibition Between Sleepless Night And Art Basel Miami Beach
“Call for Entries†Open Now Through October 21
Fall has become the season of the arts in South Florida and to showcase the contributions of LGBT artists to the area’s arts scene, Miami Beach’s LGBT Visitor Center, sponsored by MetLife, will be hosting a visual art exhibition, titled “This Art is So Gay,†that will launch in conjunction with Sleepless Night and conclude during Art Basel Miami Beach. “This Art is So Gay†will run from November 5 through December 5, 2011 at the LGBT Visitor Center, 1130 Washington Avenue, First Floor, Miami Beach. All work on display will be offered for sale to the public with proceeds benefitting the not-for-profit MDGLCC Foundation for its LGBT scholarship program.
So that the exhibition can be truly representative of South Florida’s LGBT talent – both well known and unknown — the Visitor Center is sponsoring a “Call for Entries†to visual artists who would like their works considered for inclusion in the show. Artists must be South Florida based, a member of the LGBT community, and agree to have their exhibition pieces up for sale.
To submit artwork for consideration by the exhibit’s curators, artists should submit a bio or resume, artistic statement, and at least two images representative of their work in jpg or pdf format to Cindy Brown, executive director of the LGBT Visitor Center, via email to cindy@thecenergysolution.com. Deadline for submissions is Friday, October, 21.
“There is an incredible amount of artistic talent in our LGBT community,†said Steve Adkins, chairman of the board of the MDGLCC Foundation. “By spotlighting community artists during world-class events like Sleepless Night and Art Basel, we hope to showcase this talent in front of a global audience of arts patrons and tastemakers.â€
In addition to the exhibition, the LGBT Visitor Center will host two receptions where guests can mix and mingle with the exhibition’s artists. The Opening Reception will be held Saturday, November 5, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. in conjunction with Sleepless Night. The Closing Reception will be held Sunday, December 4, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. during Art Basel Miami Beach. Both receptions are free and open to the public.
The MDGLCC opened the country’s first-ever Chamber-sponsored LGBT Visitor Center last November. The Center is open to the public five days a week and has been the venue for special events for the MDGLCC, MetLife, Florida Grand Opera, Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival and Miami Beach Gay Pride, just to name a few. The LGBT Visitor Center is located in Miami Beach’s Old City Hall at 1130 Washington Avenue, First Floor North, Miami Beach, in the heart of South Beach.
“From its inception almost a year ago, the vision for the LGBT Visitor Center has always been to become a gathering spot for locals and tourists alike,†Brown said. “This art exhibition is the perfect way to host an inclusive activity for everyone while spotlighting the contributions of the LGBT community.â€
