LegalArt Live/Work Residency Program for Miami Artists
Extension Applications Due: 1 December 2009
We received a large number of requests for extensions. People did not feel they had enough time to consult landlords and studio mates regarding existing leases. For this reason we have extended the deadlines for receipt of applications to Midnight, Tuesday December 1st. We decided to also take advantage of this opportunity to share with you the answers to the frequently questions asked by other artists. We are still here to answer your questions. Please don’t hesitate to email additional questions to kathleen@legalartmiami.org
We encourage you to forward this opportunity to artists friends in the community. Don’t forget to invite them to join our mailing list or become a fan on Facebook so they can receive communications about future SeminArts and services provided by LegalArt and our partners.
Frequently Asked Questions:
1) Is the residency for Miami artists limited to one year?
One year residency with the possibility of an additional year–this would be decided in conjunction with LegalArt
2) What is the ceiling height?
The ceilings have beams so there is a difference between the bottom of the beam and the top of the ceiling–between 8’ and 9’10”. There are also barn doors to the space
3) What sort of lighting? Are there windows?
Surface mounted daylight fluorescent tubes and very large windows warehouse type. I love the windows! There is at least one large window in each space. I don’t need additional light when I am there during the day.

Yes. God yes, this is Miami! Each studio has a thermostat.
5) Is there Internet access?
Yes, though it may be a wireless system
6) Is there a sink in the space?
Yes, each space has a slop sink
7) Would it be possible to take a look at the space?
We will be doing tours for finalists, in December, but you will need to apply first. Construction is still being completed.
8) Is there ventilation in the space?
Yes, each studio live/work space has a venting system.
9) Will I be able to do large scale welding projects in the space?
No, the fire marshal will not allow this in our space
10) I work large scale. What are the dimensions of the doorways and elevator?
Studio doors: 7′-7″ (W) x 7′-11″ (H)
Lobby doors: 6′-0″ (W) x 8′-0″ (H)
Elevator: 6′-8″ (W) x 4′-5″ (D) x 10′-0″ (H). The door is 3′-6″ (W) x 8′-0″ (H)
11) I don’t have a car. How close is public transportation?
The metro mover is 2 blocks away from which you can transfer to busses and trains.
LegalArt, with a generous grant from the Knight Foundation, is creating the first affordable live/work professional development residency in Miami. These are approximately 900 square foot studios with a communal kitchen, eating space, and showers; the community space includes exhibition, lecture and legal counseling spaces as well as a comprehensive research library encouraging interaction and collaboration. The subsidized cost of the studios per month is $400 and includes all utilities. The first juried artists will take residency early in 2010.
