SPECTRUM Miami Art Show, part of Miami Art Week and Art Basel Miami, will incorporate a wide range of local artists and emerging spaces into this year’s show through programs like Art Labs and Late Night.
Life is Art and Yo Miami have been designated as an Art Lab partner and will be collaborating to present an exhibition and live mural painting performance
during the event.
SPECTRUM Miami which takes place Dec 3-7, 2014 in Midtown Miami, adjacent to Art Miami and Context. SPECTRUM Miami is a juried contemporary art show featuring high-quality art, paintings, sculpture and mixed-media. This year’s event will feature several programs that incorporate the local art community of Miami around the theme of [inter.play] exploring the ways the arts and the community interact and build upon each other.
Life is Art was selected to participate partly based on their similar mission to create positive change in the community with arts and culture. Life Is Art operates in exactly that interplay between the community and the arts and how those build on and feed each other. Using the arts to build our city is a very hot topic in Miami right now, and we are excited to be able to showcase some of the best our city has to offer.
James Echols, co-founder of Life Is Art said, “We were very pleased to be included by SPECTRUM Miami last year and are excited to participate once again.†He went on to say, “I am happy to hear that SPECTRUM has made it a point to feature more South Florida artists in the show this year. We strongly feel that one of the components that has been missing from the Art Basel week is any sort of credit given to our local arts. I applaud SPECTRUM for being so proactive in that area.â€
“We are excited about the positive response we have experienced at SPECTRUM Miami over the past three years. SPECTRUM Miami’s collectors, buyers, art supporters and guests have been amazing and we are excited to be involved with Life is Art again this year, bringing more of the local Miami art community into SPECTRUM Miami.†Eric Smith, CEO of Redwood Media Group and SPECTRUM Miami explained. Then added, “In an effort to create even more art excitement, we are introducing a special evening program this year: Late Night. Each evening beginning at 6 p.m. there will be artist unveilings, music and entertainment, special art events, complimentary cocktails and more!â€
SPECTRUM Miami’s programs will be curated and organized by Ann Berchtold. Ann Berchtold is the Founder and Director of ART SAN DIEGO which was recently acquired by Redwood Media Group, organizer of SPECTRUM Miami and Artexpo New York. “As the Founder and Director of ART SAN DIEGO, I have always integrated the local arts community into the show through programs like Spotlight Artists, LaunchPad program, and Art Labs – which invite local emerging spaces and institutions into the fair to create site-specific installations around a current theme. Through my partnership now with Redwood Media Group – we will now be incorporating these programs into the SPECTRUM Miami show – with hopes to shine a light on the local arts community during Art Basel Week.â€
Life Is Art [mi.ami][inter.play] Booth
SPECTRUM Miami has provided Life Is Art with a donated booth in which to feature our Miami artists. The focus of [mi.ami][inter.play] is collaboration – between artists, between the arts and the community, and between Miami and the Art World at large. This is a juried show with an open call for artists. Any artist living or working in south Florida may apply. Works are encouraged to be collaborative creations with two or more artists, but are not required to be so. Works may be in any of the visual mediums.
The call for artists opens in early July and closes mid-August. The works are juried by local arts experts, as well as a representative of SPECTRUM Miami. Preference is given to collaborative works, but individual works are also welcome. We are also encouraging 3D and multi-media works. A small application fee is assessed to cover the costs of processing.
The theme of the works should be that interplay between art and community, the congruence, how art tells the story of the people and their life, how the community thrives on that art. Conversely, it can speak to how art is disruptive, how it breaks the community, exposing holes in its soul. Artists are free to create their own interpretation of that theme, but make it speak to how art and culture are the soul of any society. All work will be for sale. A small commission for each sale is paid to the salesperson, Life Is Art keeps no commission. Click here for the call for artists.
Life Is Late Night Art Live Mural Project
On Thursday night, SPECTRUM Miami is inviting Life Is Art to be co-host and beneficiary of Late Night. Life Is Art, with the help of Yo Miami, is co-curating a live mural painting as part of the night’s entertainment.
The mural painting is an invitational, combining experienced artists with emerging up-and-comers, to truly represent the exploding Miami street art scene. Each mural represents the concept that life really is art. Each mural is to be painted by a collaboration of two or more artists, live during Thursday’s Late Night. A portion of the sales goes to support Life Is Art, with the rest going to the artists.
In addition, SPECTRUM Miami has committed to donate a portion of the Thursday Late Night proceeds to Life Is Art.
