Twenty-four Broward County artists will be selected through a Call to Artist application process, to attend a one-day Real Community Engagement Workshop. Hosted by Broward Cultural Division and ArtServe, Inc. and presented by Creative Capital’s Professional Development Program, the workshop will be held on Saturday, December 1, 2012, at Young At Art Museum, 751 SW 121st Ave. in Davie.

To be considered, Broward artists will be submitting proposals to participate in the seminar. Participants will apply online and be chosen by a competitive review and panel selection process. There will be a series of informational sessions to prepare Broward’s performing and media artists, writers, musicians, dancers and visual artists for this opportunity.

Today, artists in all disciplines are choosing to collaborate with institutions and individuals outside the traditional art community to create work that engages topics of social and political relevance. The Real Community Engagement workshop is designed to help artists clarify their objectives and gain the management skills they need to produce successful community-engaged projects. Professional Development Program workshops are designed to accommodate artists in all disciplines and at all stages of their careers. This diversity of participation helps create new alliances across genres and generations, which, in turn, leads to one of the program’s lasting effects: stronger artistic communities in the cities where these workshops are presented.
The facilitator, Aaron Landsman, is a playwright, performer and teacher. His stage plays have been presented in New York, Philadelphia, Cleveland and Minneapolis, as well as in Sweden, Norway and Belarus. He has taught at The Juilliard School and NYU and guest lectured at many colleges and universities including Columbia and Stanford Universities. He is an advocate for artists in Belarus and Turkey, whose freedom of expression, he feels, is under threat. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife Johanna S. Meyer and their son Harold Emmett Landsman.
